'So uncivilized' or considerably better than 'hokey religions and ancient weapons'? Enough is to say about the blaster from Star Wars, but would they also be possible in real life?
A team specializing in laser technology from the University of Warsaw, tried the effect of one blast shot to imitate. For this the team used a new, compact and very powerful laser to shoot a short beam through the air.
However: if you want to capture this 'blast' shot on film, you need a camera that can record a speed of one billion frames per second. That explained doctor Yuriy Stepanenko, the leader of the team responsible for the development of the laser in question.
To make it even a little more difficult: such a camera does not exist. The laser shot ten times per second and by means of a modified camera that was synchronized with the laser shots, image could still be created. A little water vapor in the test chamber also helped to make it visible.
In Star Wars the green and red are flying around, but what about this laser?
The laser is closest to infrared, but the color changes through a physical process around the pulse.
Because of the power of the laser, a kind of plasma layer develops around the light beam. This layer gives off multiple wavelengths of light and when you get it at the same time, you see white.
Use as a weapon
Can we at least use this laser to shoot TIE fighters or ourselves to defend against pushy bounty hunters?
That is in any case not the intended use of the laser shots. Because the shots can reach far, the research team believes that the laser can be used to measure air pollution.
The reaction of the white laser light with atoms in the air can give researchers data about various substances in the atmosphere.

Star Wars Studies: Does the shooting of Greedo stand for self-defense?
A well-known scene from A New Hope is Han Solo who shoots Greedo in the Cantina. Could this be substantiated as self-defense? In response to a survey of 'The Legal Geeks', I spoke with lawyer and geek Sidney Smeets. What would Solo expect from the Dutch court? (Lake…)
